Giants: settled starter, depleted but energetic lineup
Blade Tidwell is listed to start after a clean long outing at Boston, with his recent back tightness no longer a stated concern. He last worked August 22, so rest is adequate, and his August pattern has been manageable first-inning traffic followed by sharper fastball-sweeper command.
The lineup remains thin. Willy Adames is on the injured list with an elbow sprain, Victor Bericoto, Matt Chapman, Casey Schmitt, JT Brubaker and Daniel Susac are out, and Jung Hoo Lee is a day-to-day decision after pinch-hitting Thursday. Rafael Devers remains the anchor, while Drew Gilbert, Jonah Cox and Turner Hill have added contact and speed behind him.
Diamondbacks: wild-card pressure and a day-of pitching question
The Arizona Diamondbacks enter Game 2 immediately outside the final National League Wild Card spot after losing Thursday's opener 6-1. Gabriel Moreno returned behind the plate and homered, but Nolan Arenado, Jordan Lawlar and Ketel Marte did not start the series opener, leaving Friday's lineup partly unclear.
Kohl Drake is listed opposite Tidwell, but the assignment comes with real uncertainty. The MLB probable-pitcher page at mlb.com has him in the slot, yet his transaction record still showed an August 7 option to Reno and no public recall at the research cutoff, so a pregame move or late replacement remains possible.
Drake's scouting profile is command-and-mix rather than overpowering. An elevated four-seam fastball and a curveball are his main weapons, but fastballs that leak down have produced damaging airborne contact.
Oracle Park conditions lean against blowout scoring
The Friday night forecast calls for upper 50s to low 60s, considerable cloud cover and a breeze of roughly 15–25 mph moving toward right-center. The cool marine layer tends to reduce ordinary fly-ball carry, while the deep gaps punish poor outfield reads more than routine high fly balls.
That does not completely kill all power. Left-handed pull contact toward the short right-field arcade can still get help from the wind, which matters against Drake's elevated fastball when it stays in the hitting zone.
Giants +1.5 is the value side
The market is treating Arizona as a standard road favorite on full-season résumé and playoff urgency, but the day-of pitching picture tilts the run line. Blade Tidwell is the more settled starter, while Kohl Drake is a spot-start uncertainty and a contact-heavy pitcher, and Oracle Park's deep gaps make multi-run blowouts less automatic.
The Giants do not need to win outright for this bet to land. The path is keeping the game within a run, and the Giants' offense has enough energy to pressure an unfamiliar starter through small ball and aggressive baserunning. A late Drake replacement would change the matchup, but as listed the home side has the clearer setup.
The main risk is late relief. Ryan Walker has pitched on consecutive days, Dylan Smith was recently called gassed, and Trent Harris is likely limited after Thursday, so a close game can still turn into a two-run loss.
