The Toronto Blue Jays found their swing in Friday’s opener and kept their leverage relievers out of the traffic. The Seattle Mariners now need a rookie left-hander to slow that momentum with both clubs chasing a place in the playoff field.
Blue Jays can build the lineup from the right side
José Soriano is listed to start for the Blue Jays in a rebound assignment after his first poor outing with the club. His power sinker and heavy ground-ball profile fit a strong Toronto defense, provided he keeps the pitch below Seattle’s pull-side power.
The more useful angle is the lineup awaiting Kade Anderson. George Springer reached safely throughout Friday and homered, while Kazuma Okamoto also went deep by handling a sweeper that had caused him problems.
Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Springer, Alejandro Kirk and Okamoto give the Blue Jays a substantial right-handed core against a young lefty. Toronto can also put hard ground contact toward an improvised Seattle left side that made mistakes in the series opener.
Mariners may need length behind Anderson
Kade Anderson is listed by mlb.com for his second Major League start after being promoted directly from Double-A. His debut showed strike-throwing poise, but consecutive home runs on his final two pitches illustrated the danger when a young starter faces the order again.
The Mariners are likely to manage his workload carefully, bringing Bryce Miller into play as a possible bulk follower. Miller is stretched out after moving from the rotation, so Seattle has a better bridge than the usual emergency collection of middle relievers.
Seattle’s offense has stalled over its past two games, producing little beyond Dominic Canzone’s homer on Friday. The primary leverage relievers are rested, but the Mariners are also beginning ten straight games without an off-day and have reason to avoid unnecessary bullpen mileage.
Turf matters more than an unannounced roof
First pitch is scheduled for 3:07 PM ET at Rogers Centre, with warm, dry conditions and little postponement risk. The roof decision remains unannounced, so treating wind as a central handicapping factor would be guesswork in a retractable-roof park.
The artificial turf rewards firm ground contact and clean infield positioning. That favors the Blue Jays’ defensive structure behind Soriano and gives their hitters another route to pressure Seattle’s unsettled left side.
Four Blue Jays runs is the cleanest target
The Blue Jays do not need to chase Anderson out immediately. They can attack his strike-throwing approach with a right-handed order, make him work through repeat looks and force Seattle to reveal the planned handoff earlier than it would prefer.
Toronto also has fresh video from Anderson’s debut, while Springer and Okamoto enter with recent barrel contact. A homer is useful, naturally, but hard grounders and extra outs against the makeshift infield can do the same accounting.
The team total isolates that offensive matchup without requiring the Blue Jays’ unsettled ninth-inning structure to protect a lead. It also avoids relying on Seattle to contribute against Soriano’s ground-ball plan.
Miller’s possible bulk role is the main obstacle, and Seattle’s late-inning group is rested. Anderson’s prospect-level stuff also gives him a path to a cleaner second start if he avoids mistakes on later trips through the order.
