Harriet Dart and Peyton Stearns open their US Open on Monday at 15:00 UTC, in a first-round rematch of a Cincinnati meeting played barely two weeks ago. Stearns won that one, but only after saving set points in a second-set tiebreak. The question here concerns the margin rather than the winner.
One of them has played three matches this week, the other none
Dart came through qualifying the hard way: every match went to a deciding set, including a 2-6 6-4 6-1 win over Heather Watson from a set and a break down. Her pattern is consistent and slightly alarming — she starts below her level, then finds it. She is at least in rhythm on these courts.
Stearns has not played singles since Cincinnati, where she led Clara Tauson in the decider, missed several match points and lost every remaining game. Before that came a 0-6 5-7 defeat to Elena Gabriela Ruse in Toronto and a loss to Elvina Kalieva after winning the middle set 6-2. The first-strike forehand is not in doubt; the sustained hour of discipline is.
Five clean games is a considerable ask
To cover a five-game margin Stearns has to front-run for a full match, which she has not managed all summer, and she has to do it while locating her timing in real time. Dart's second serve is the honest risk: it is exactly the ball Stearns attacks, and another 1-6 opening set would put the number under pressure straight away.
The likelier shapes — a set lost on a tiebreak, or a set won and a third conceded — keep Dart inside the cushion. Close to even money on a player who keeps hanging around in matches she is not controlling is the better side.
