Braves shuffle the deck before López’s return
The Braves have scored one run across consecutive losses, with too many empty at-bats after early opportunities. Drake Baldwin moves to leadoff, Michael Harris II to cleanup, while Ozzie Albies and Austin Riley drop to seventh and eighth.
Reynaldo López is listed to start after missing the majors since late July with inflammation in his left landing knee. The Braves activated him from the injured list Wednesday, a move recorded by mlb.com, after three rehabilitation starts without a reported setback. He is expected to work as a conventional starter, although extension, release point and fielding movement bear watching.
The safety net is useful: Raisel Iglesias and the normal leverage group are rested, while Bailey Falter supplies fresh length. The softer spot comes between those layers if López exits before the game reaches its usual late-inning shape.
Rays bring left-handed barrels and fast feet
The Rays answered a bruising loss in Texas by spreading damage throughout Tuesday’s series opener. Junior Caminero, Liam Hicks, Yandy Díaz and Richie Palacios all homered, while Victor Mesa Jr. and Chandler Simpson added movement and pressure around them.
Six left-handed hitters are in the order against López, with Simpson, Mesa, Palacios and Jorge Mateo offering speed as well as contact. That is a deliberate test of a pitcher returning from a landing-knee issue: show bunt, widen the lead, force a slide step and make him leave the mound.
Griffin Jax is listed to start for the Rays, but this would be only his second major-league outing since an elbow shutdown. His previous late scratch and the subsequent injury process were detailed by mlb.com. Extra rest helps, though his uneven return showed that health and game rhythm are separate boxes on the scout’s sheet.
Bryan Baker remains available at the back end, and Tyler Wells offers a fresher multi-inning bridge. The concern is reduced middle-relief depth with Garrett Cleavinger and Manuel Rodríguez unavailable, even after a clean finish in Tuesday’s comfortable win.
Warm air and a reachable right-field corner
First pitch is scheduled for 7:15 PM ET in warm, mostly clear conditions, with the temperature around 86°F. Rain risk is low, and a modest wind offers no reliable directional angle.
Truist Park rewards well-pulled left-handed contact toward the right-field corner, though deeper right-center and the taller wall keep it honest. For a Rays lineup carrying six left-handed bats, the warm air is more useful than the uncertain breeze.
Make López field his position, then attack the bridge
The Rays do not need to wait for hanging breaking balls. Their best route is repeated traffic: patient left-handed at-bats, aggressive leads and soft contact that makes López move off the mound.
An abbreviated or uneven start would expose the Braves’ less secure middle bridge before the rested leverage arms can settle the game. Tampa Bay already showed in the opener that its scoring can come from beyond the top of the order, which matters when backing a team total rather than a single star matchup.
López completed three rehab starts without a reported setback, and the Braves have their best late-inning relievers rested. If he commands the ball cleanly and works into the middle innings, the route to a fourth Rays run becomes narrower.
