Fresh Dodgers arms get the last look at the Marlins — 13 September

The Miami Marlins have made this series uncomfortable, and the Los Angeles Dodgers still have October positioning to settle. In a rubber game, the cleanest edge may arrive after the starters leave.

Pérez has the stuff; the strike zone is the assignment

Eury Pérez is listed to start for the Marlins, but his recent command has wandered when pitching from the stretch. The velocity and five-pitch mix remain imposing; the concern is the extra traffic created when his sinker misses arm-side and the fastball leaks toward barrel contact.

Pérez can escape imperfect innings by producing weak grounders, yet the Dodgers are equipped to make him work when he falls behind. His workload is also being managed, so another spell of walks could bring a quicker hook than his raw stuff would normally suggest.

That would expose the more fragile part of the matchup. The Marlins used five relievers Saturday, with Cade Gibson carrying the clearest fatigue concern and Tyler Zuber coming off a laborious inning. Pete Fairbanks only recently returned from the IL and worked Saturday, leaving his availability for another late lead uncertain.

Miami snapped a four-game slide by answering the Dodgers’ early power and protecting a narrow lead Saturday. Owen Caissie, however, is a major doubt after leaving that game with right-hamstring tightness, with preceding lower-back discomfort also disclosed by mlb.com.

Sheehan has fresh cover waiting behind him

Emmet Sheehan is scheduled to start for the Dodgers after an encouraging return to the rotation. He recovered from an early home run, missed bats and held his delivery together until traffic developed late.

One sharp outing does not erase the delivery inconsistency that previously sent him to Triple-A. The useful part for the Dodgers is that they do not need to squeeze unnecessary outs from him if the arm slot starts drifting.

Evan Phillips, Brock Stewart, Blake Treinen and Edgardo Henriquez were all rested Saturday and should form a well-stocked late-inning group. That gives the Dodgers a direct route from Sheehan to their best available relief arms without asking the starter to survive a damaging third look through the order.

The lineup is missing Shohei Ohtani, who was placed on the IL with left-knee soreness and right-biceps discomfort while swinging, as detailed by mlb.com. Freddie Freeman is also managing a sore right knee, but Kyle Tucker, Max Muncy and Teoscar Hernández still give Pérez little room for a centered fastball.

A controlled park keeps the margins narrow

First pitch is scheduled for 1:40 PM ET at loanDepot park, with the retractable roof strongly expected to be closed because of the heat and humidity. That should remove wind from the equation and create a stable run-prevention setting.

The broad outfield can reward line drives into the gaps, though it also gives capable defenders room to chase down fly balls. Friday and Saturday both stayed competitive deep into the game, which fits a park where one bullpen mistake can matter more than a loud early inning.

The rested bullpen is the separator

The Dodgers have the clearer nine-inning pitching plan. If Sheehan’s delivery loosens, they can move quickly to rested leverage arms; if Pérez’s command slips, the Marlins may have to cover more outs with a relief group carrying heavier mileage.

That contrast matters more than the difference between the starters at their best. Pérez owns the louder raw arsenal, but recent walks, a managed workload and uncertain relief support leave the Dodgers with more ways to control the final third of the game.
