Monnet has already done the difficult miles
Monnet qualified by beating No. 245 Katrina Scott 7-6, 6-7, 6-2 in nearly three hours. She has now handled two matches at the venue, producing eight breaks in each, although 10 double faults in both contests explain why little has been straightforward.
Stephens’ hard-court level has improved markedly. Her 6-4, 6-1 win over No. 38 Clara Tauson at the US Open was controlled and economical, following another clean victory over No. 25 Anastasia Potapova in Cincinnati.
The favourite still has to earn the margin
Stephens can read Monnet’s second serve and should begin plenty of rallies in a favourable position. Yet her present game is based more on balance, defence and patient redirection than quick separation; passive openings and traded breaks remain part of the package.
Monnet’s fatigue is the clear risk, but she finished strongly against Scott after losing the second-set tiebreak. Her return pressure, stubbornness in close sets and familiarity with the conditions give her several routes to stay within five games, even if Stephens ultimately advances.
