Kaitlin Quevedo and Nadia Podoroska meet in the WTA Sao Paulo final on September 20 at 18:30 UTC. Their first WTA singles final asks a neat question: can forehand speed outrun experience and return pressure?

Quevedo survived; Podoroska took control

Quevedo beat world No. 94 Anna Blinkova 6-4, 2-6, 6-4, but the semifinal lasted almost two and a half hours and repeatedly knocked her out of rhythm. The 20-year-old eventually recovered her forehand discipline, although seven double faults and her admission of fatigue make recovery more than a footnote.

Podoroska's 6-3, 6-4 win over No. 70 Paula Badosa was shorter and cleaner in its shape. She kept returning, changed the height and direction of rallies, and prevented a powerful opponent from settling—precisely the assignment she faces again on this hard court.

Depth can take the forehand away

Quevedo is dangerous whenever she steps inside the baseline and finds the next forehand. Podoroska's route is to push her back, work over the backhand and make every attacking ball slightly less comfortable than it first appears.

The older player still carries risk on serve after nine double faults in each of her last two matches. Even so, her ranking of 317 understates the level of this comeback, while the lighter semifinal leaves her well placed to turn return pressure into a first WTA singles title.

Prediction: Nadia Podoroska to win, odds 2.295
