Even a sharp version is unlikely to be a deep-game starter. Behind him, the Cubs' bullpen had to cover multiple innings Saturday with Colin Rea, and Ryan Zeferjahn was already used heavily on Friday, so a short Cabrera start would test the middle-relief depth immediately.
Seiya Suzuki remains the lineup's most dependable impact bat, and Michael Conforto's three-run homer Saturday kept the offense dangerous. The Cubs' bats have been more volatile than consistent in this series.
Cardinals: the steadier starter and a new lower-middle threat
The Cardinals counter with Hunter Dobbins, who is probable and carries no active health flag after five full days of rest. His best version showed up in Anaheim in late July, when he spun six scoreless innings by throwing strikes and changing shapes rather than overpowering hitters. Monday against Philadelphia was shakier early, but he settled enough to keep the game close.
Joshua Báez is the immediate difference in the lineup. Recalled from Triple-A on Saturday and slotted fifth, per foxsports.com, he answered with two home runs — one to each side of the field.
Blaze Jordan and Alec Burleson also homered Saturday, giving the Cardinals several bats capable of punishing the elevated mistakes Cabrera has made when his command wavers. Masyn Winn's range at shortstop also helps erase the ground-ball pressure the Cubs want to create.
Wrigley's wind and the storm window
Weather is the loudest external variable. First pitch is expected near 83 degrees with high humidity, and the freshest forecast places a thunderstorm threat near 3 PM local time — right inside the early innings.
Wind direction was not confirmed as of this writing, but a southerly component would turn Wrigley into a fly-ball hazard. A delay would cut harder against Cabrera and his controlled rehab workload than against Dobbins.
The angle: too much certainty around an unfinished activation
The market is treating this as a routine strong home side, but Cabrera is not a normal listed starter. He is returning from a cart-off injury without an official activation posted, with a blister history and a likely workload limit. Hunter Dobbins gives the Cardinals the clearer expected innings.
