One clean opener, two different hard-court tests

Ostapenko beat Anastasia Zakharova 6-4 6-1 in her Seoul opener, her first singles win since July. It was a welcome change after a retirement against Zhang Shuai in Toronto and straight-sets defeat to Magdalena Frech in Cincinnati, though one sharp match does not settle the question of consistency.

Preston recovered from a lost second set to beat Himeno Sakatsume 6-2 3-6 6-2 here. Her US Open win over Alycia Parks showed she can stay composed against pace and press in return games; the heavy defeat to Taylor Townsend showed what happens when an opponent serves and attacks cleanly.

Preston needs a foothold, not control

Ostapenko can take time away from Preston, and a clean serving day would make this handicap difficult to cover. But her recent loss to Tatjana Maria, after winning the opening set, is a reminder that an early advantage need not become a comfortable finish.

Preston does not have to dictate the match. If she makes Ostapenko play another ball and finds chances on return, even a straight-sets loss can stay inside the line. At +4.5 games, that is enough room to back the younger player.
