Return pressure, with breaks available both ways

Gibson beat Fiona Ferro 6-3, 6-3 in her opener, taking seven of 11 break points. That was convincing work on return, less so on serve: she landed fewer than half her first deliveries and won only six of 25 points behind her second. Her hard-court game gives her control of this matchup, though not always control of the scoreboard.

Morvayova lost her final Singapore qualifying match to Joanna Garland 4-6, 3-6 before entering as a lucky loser. Her first serve had worked better in a straight-set win over Nika Radisic, and she took seven games from Garland even when it offered less protection. Those are modest grounds for resistance, but the handicap asks for resistance rather than an upset.

Six games is a substantial margin

Gibson should find chances against Morvayova’s second serve; the harder question is how many routine holds she can produce herself. The same 6-3, 6-3 score she posted against Ferro would leave Morvayova inside +6.5 games. Gibson’s recent double-fault spells make that line worth taking seriously.

Morvayova’s two September retirements are the clear risk, although she completed both qualifying matches and has had several days since the Garland loss. If she remains fit and protects enough first serves, she can lose in straight sets and still cover.
