Lys has not been holding serve reliably enough to make a four-and-a-half-game margin look routine. She hit 15 double faults against Podoroska, seven against Ruse and eight in the US Open loss to Andreeva; low confidence has also made her passive at important moments. Chronic spondyloarthritis has added to a physically difficult season.

Even the São Paulo win over Cé was close to slipping away: Lys let a lead go and had to recover after Cé served for the match. Sun brings junior-title momentum and showed in the US Open final that she could reset after a lopsided second set, against Pushkareva, who had beaten her at Wimbledon.
